Available now for long-term lease: Pierre Koenig, Architect, FAIA | Henry E. and Ruth Softley Burwash House, 1958. Suspended on the northern tip of the Verdugo Mountains in Tujunga, this architectural masterwork was designed to respond directly to Southern California's unique environmental conditions. The Burwash House features Koenig's signature use of exposed steel and glass, showcasing an efficient structural system that embodies the innovative building techniques of its time. In 2008, the current stewards commissioned James Tyler, a former associate of Craig Ellwood, to expand the home. This expansion added four bedrooms and four bathrooms, bringing the total living space to 2,150 square feet while maintaining Koenig's focus on climate control. Visitors are welcomed by an L-shaped concrete walkway that leads to a concrete block wall, guiding them into the home. A landscaped feature on the west side creates a private patio for the den, enhancing the fireplace's backdrop. Large sliding glass doors on the north and south sides promote cross-ventilation and offer expansive views, seamlessly connecting indoor and outdoor living. Koenig oriented the house's longest side facing south to maximize natural ventilation and shading. He extended the overhang, effectively doubling the shade during the hottest months. Steel I-beams span the shortest distance of the house, creating a wide cantilevered eave over the southern glass wall and eliminating the need for interior columns. A low concrete fireplace with a round steel flue, similar to the one in the Lamel House, serves both the living area and the den. The Burwash House represents a pivotal shift in Koenig's architectural philosophy, showcasing a refined approach to structural efficiency that integrates harmoniously with its surroundings. The residence, with its airy design and glass walls, provides gorgeous views of the mountains. Here, one enjoys a direct connection to nature and abundant natural light. This home includes an open-plan living space, four bedrooms, four bathrooms, a laundry room, and a den. 12-month minimum, unfurnished. Photography courtesy of Cameron Carothers.
